2024 Shares - AVAILABLE, READY DECEMBER 2024
Our pure bred Black Angus steer are grass-fed AND grass-finished, they are never finished on grain.
The steer graze on pastures all day, every day allowing them to grow at a healthy rate while producing beef with more nutrients and a richer flavor than grain finished beef. We regularly rotate them to fresh pastures so they can keep munching fresh and tender, green grass. Rotating pastures allows the previously grazed areas time to regrow and manure time to break down, naturally fertilizing the pasture. It’s a natural system that benefits the animals and the environment.
During late summer and the colder winter months we supplement what’s available in the pasture with grass hay - clover and alfalfa. Their favorite is sweet, sweet clover; which is often hand fed to them by the kids. Of course, they also have a feeder trough full of hay but the trough doesn’t offer scratching and petting in addition to the hay. The steer often mosey by the chicken coop and graze alongside the chickens. We like to think they find the chickens as entertaining as we do.
The entire family cares for the steer, we all fill the water and we all haul hay, some of us a bale and some of us a flake. They are a natural, and somewhat noble, addition to the pastures.
